An external hard drive is the most valuable backup device. You can back up your data on the device, erase it and keep it in a safe place. I bought this drive for precisely this reason and also because it came with the WD Backup software required to schedule and create regular incremental backups. The problem I had with the drive was that no matter what I did, the WD Backup software refused to recognize the passport. drive as backup destination. I installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, and repeated for most of the day with no tangible results. I also spent over two hours on the phone with two different WD "Tier 2" technicians to no avail. My system is a very basic Windows 10 (64-bit) HP, so installing WD Backup shouldn't have been a problem. I could add, change or delete any or all of the files in the passport; My computer recognized the presence of a WD Passport drive with no problems; The drive passed all tests, but WD Backup flatly refused to consider it as a backup target. Your mileage may vary, but I've spent a lot of time (generally almost a full day) and achieved nothing.
