I wanted a laser range finder to use tralateration to locate objects on my property, and I didn't want to pay a surveyor. I have a 200ft tape measure and it works well, but there is a lot of work to carry around and sometimes it's difficult to get the end to stay attached to the object. Also, most of my property is hilly and wooded, and I don't want to lug around a tape measure. I wanted to try the laser machine and it should have an excellent range of at least 200 feet. This Huepar looked like it could get the job done. I bought Huepar because it has the longest range, is rechargeable, and has an electronic level. It has all the standard modes: distance, area, volume, cumulative area, and Pythagorean triangle measurements. You set the mode by pressing the button to cycle through the modes, and an icon on the screen will indicate which mode you are in. There is also an indicator on the icon that indicates what measurements need to be taken for the selected mode. Pretty easy to use and you don't have to memorize every sequence. The case looks very robust, like rubberized plastic. I had serious doubts that the device could actually measure up to 393 feet for two reasons. Firstly, the reflection of the laser dot will be quite weak, and this device has the same class II laser as the others, and secondly, it will be difficult to keep the dot on the target at such a distance. I tried measuring the distance to the back of my truck (silver) and was able to get a reading of about 104 feet on a cloudy day. The biggest challenge was maintaining space on the truck bed while holding the device with my free hand. I tried again at night trying to reduce the wobble with a prop and was able to get out at 250ft, but only if I could save space on the license plate. I could tell when I hit the license plate because the spot was much lighter. It only took a few fractions of a second for the brighter spot to give me a reading. (Update) I bought a monopod to stabilize the unit and was able to measure up to 340ft at dusk. The biggest problem was keeping the laser spot on the license plate. I keep thinking that and need a tripod. The problem is that pressing the button to start the measurement knocks the laser dot off the target, but there is a secret assistant for that. A useful feature is the "delayed measurement" where you can start a timer programmable from 5 to 60 seconds and the measurement will then be taken automatically. So it should be a snap to use a tripod and aim the beam at the target during deceleration to get a reading. As far as I can tell, the electronic leveling angle is for information only. Not used in any calculation. Conclusion: A good device and based on today's knowledge I would still buy it for my purposes. However, I need to use some sort of prism target that reflects the laser light back into the device. I don't think a white target is enough because I think for extreme range you need something that bounces right back into the laser module. I bought some 60cm x 60cm stickers but they will be difficult to hit from a distance. With a tripod to keep the device steady, it would be possible to hit this small target (yes, there's a tripod socket on the bottom). As an alternative, I have some old license plates that I'll try to use because they represent a much bigger goal. To update. I glued picatinny rails to the side, attached a 4x scope ($25) and mounted it on a lightweight tripod ($40). I zeroed the scope so the laser beam was parallel to the reticle. With a scope and a tripod, I can keep a laser dot on a license plate 400 feet away. I took three readings and got 404.17ft, 404.16ft and 404.16ft on a heavily overcast day targeting the license plate. At this distance, highly reflective material is required to return an adequate signal to the laser receiver. Excellent repeatability, but can't speak to accuracy yet. But very happy with the results.
