When it's good to have a new vise

This is the second Wilton vise I have used in the last 10 years. I recently moved and installed an old Wilton on my desktop in an old house. It held up well, but the sliding feature was almost useless. I'm glad to see that this model has been redesigned and I love the square steel channel that covers the main screw. Should really protect from dust. I chose to attach it with four screws instead of using lag screws. Screws are more positive and easier to install. Much easier than my last setup when I manually held the block in place by screwing in the screws. This time I held the vise in place with 6" C-Clamps and drilled 3/8" holes from the bottom using the base of the vise as a secure template. I then drilled a 5/8" countersunk hole for each screw head in my 3/4" MDF countertop. I put 4 3-1/2"X 3/8" screws in the top of the workbench and used Gorilla Glue to hold it in place as it expands as it cures (make sure that you are catalyzing a surface with water) to fill the gap. spaces around apartments. If necessary. Once the glue had set overnight (I put a non-stick surface and heavy weights on each hole to keep the foam from expanding upwards), I used a hydraulic jack to lift it into position under the bench, to install the four nuts. None of my installed screws came loose with moderate torque so all went well.

Pros
  • Bench vise
Cons
  • A few bits and pieces
