First I got the MCSE certification in the mid 1990s, I'm not new to IT or advanced NAS. I have installed many backup solutions and here are my impressions of the Synology product.1. The installation and configuration is not easy. It basically has its own operating system and is not very intuitive. The advantage is that it is very obvious, which is why there are many videos on YouTube that explain the basics of the system. Lots of TLAs and confusing configuration options to go through.2. Fuses can be damaged and will most likely be damaged without reason and without explanation from Synology, even when connected to a reliable UPS.3. If you have a problem, investigation can take several weeks, sometimes without resolution.4. If your pool degrades, your data is still there, but you can't copy it, even in read-only mode.5. If you really do have a problem - sometimes support can't guarantee the device is working properly - spin the wheel again fearing another failure. 6. You must backup all data on this device, otherwise there is a high possibility of losing them.7. You can do the math for $500 each, no hard drives - there are easier ways to back up your data. The cloud is much cheaper - offline drives are much easier and take less time overall - for the price of this device you can buy dedicated drives with networking which seem more reliable with simpler configurations.8. Backing up your backup from a complex NAS goes against what the NAS is supposed to do.9. The myth that "a drive is lost and keeps working" is just a myth. Don't trust your data to this product.10. You can get Plex to work on this device, but you'll spend more time setting it up than looking at anything. If you want to use it, the connections usually have to be reset to change the fun of what it's supposed to do.11. Thing is super weak in the RAM department.12. If you enjoy playing admin on your home network and consider it a hobby - more power to you - for 98% of the civilian population it is not only a waste of money but also a waste of time. will not bring you peace of mind, you will dread the day your data is gone. I wish I had never seen this thing - and all the super positive reviews on YouTube? Most of them are paid or paid with free gear.
