I just got my Tivo and have archived my shows to DVD so make a DVD STACK regularly. Tried all the standard transfer labels but wasn't happy with the results; Whites were "good" but very pedestrian. The clear ones were the prettiest, but they always had air bubbles in them. Solution: Printable DVDs and Epson. After reading all the reviews I bought a used Epson 260 and was VERY happy with it. The cartridges may be expensive, but the markings are just primitive! Sharp, crisp and very professional looking so in my opinion it was worth it. The included labeling software is easy to use and even my first attempt at printing was a success! I use Epson exclusively for printing DVD labels so can't comment on how economical it is for general printing, but if you need something to print the DVD Photo 260 is Epson's cheapest and gets the job done! And you want to print on "printed" DVDs and not "Lightscribe" because I almost made that mistake. I use Verbatim DataLife Plus Printable DVDs and I highly recommend them for several reasons: 1) they dry almost instantly and I think the glossy white finish looks best. 2) My MacBook Pro's Superdrive refused to pick up some other brands, but Verbatims were recommended by the Apple Store techs and are recording reliably. Marking DVDs with a marker or regular CD-style labels works great, but if you want a finished DVD that looks professional, look no further than Photo 260!
