Small, dirty Suitable for special vehicles

I have had a similar Hamilton Beach Panini press for many years. I replaced it because the nonstick coating was starting to peel off. Not wanting to go through that again, I chose Chefman by reading reviews rather than reading the specs. Initially, it is advertised as a two-part press. It's *only* two panes wide. Hamilton Beach has a significantly larger cooking area. Second, there's a green dumb lightbulb here, but that doesn't tell you in any way that your food is ready. There is no temperature control, so the green light will turn on and off as the heating element turns on and off. That means you have to check in regularly to see your sandwich being made. Third, the lid doesn't pinch like it did on Hamilton Beach. The weight of the very light lid is all you get as long as you don't hold it with your hand. This becomes a problem when making paninis with thick Italian or French bread, since the outside of the bread is browned long before the ingredients in the sandwich have warmed up. Who wants a panini without melted cheese? Third, the temperature varied significantly from edge to edge. I made 2 grilled cheese paninis. The left sandwich had perfectly even toast on top and a slightly undercooked left side on the bottom. The sandwich on the right had both outside edges slightly undercooked. I made a standard cheese panini: 2 slices of white American Land o' Lakes cheese sandwiched between 2 slices of commercial wheat bread. It was impossible to tell if the cheese melted. I looked for a sign that the cheese was done but couldn't see it, and when it finally liquefied, the cheese literally ran out of the sandwich and down the front of the car. I ended up with paninis that only had about half the cheese and a huge mess. On the plus side, the non-stick coating is cleaned with a damp cloth and the plastic surface of the machine is also cleaned. I would not. I recommend this product.
