This is a good slab of stone covered with plaster of paris applied very smoothly. Good quality thick boards are glued to the back on all four sides, providing a very smooth edge for strength and durability. I like to apply a layer of my own gesso to a smooth surface to give a little "tooth" for oil, acrylic or watercolor painting. I apply this layer of plaster first vertically and then horizontally with a wide-bristle brush.
