I ordered this after losing my patience with my pencil iron which works great but lasts forever. Yes, they are designed for lighter electronics repair jobs, so as always, get the right tool for the job. This Weller is a BEAST compared to him. It's HEAVY and makes a nice "hum" sound when you pull the trigger. Worked like a champ. Three minor complaints. The trigger controls the high/low temperature settings with two detents. Inexplicably, "high" is the first solution, and to reach "low," pull the trigger all the way down. Am I the only one who finds this a bit illogical? The good thing is that you can clearly tell from the hum which level you have selected. Likewise the headlights. On "high" they are a bit lighter. when they work. The bulbs weren't unscrewed all the way out of the box, so at first I thought it was DOA. Twist twist and they came to life. The lamp sockets dangle a little in the body. I'm not sure if this was planned in advance. But these are old-school incandescent bulbs (not LEDs), and no replacement parts are included. You might want to pick them up before you need them. Finally, the lanyard appears to have no pull/release protection at the point of entry into the gun. No grommets, no rubberized tail sheath covering the lanyard by a few inches at the handle, just a wide-open opening. For cautious users, clean loading is probably not a cause for concern, but if you're lugging this around to work stations, the hole will let unwanted stuff through. OK, maybe another problem. a business. The clear plastic front is great for advertising, but won't last long if you're not very careful. Overall it does what I'm asking of it and was $25 cheaper than the very similar but more powerful D650 300/200W. As others have pointed out, not the best option for fine, delicate electronic work where pencils rule. More wires, this thing is cool! The initial heat up took about 20 seconds in "High" mode, after that each successive pull of the trigger melted the liquid metal in less than 10 seconds, but I never set the 6 second melting record that others have reported. Great value for money in neat packaging. Just a little bit of detail.
