Bulky waistband for my opinion

I went with the denim fabric and it’s a great skirt! I love the length and most of all, the pockets, but the waist band is extremely bulky in the back. I think it’s the thickness of the fabric 3 times, with a thick piece of elastic for the stretch. I’ll most likely cut it out and redo it because I have the skirt. I ordered a white one, with different fabric to see if it’s any better.
