Review on Innovative Tormek SE-77 Square Edge Jig: Perfect for Sharpening Wood Chisels and Plane Blades/Irons by Mike Bucher

Don't throw good money after bad money.

In general I gave this device 2 points. It gets an extra star, it's just that it was head and shoulders ahead of the original. I also have an old Super Grind 2000 so this may not apply to a newer machine. It's worth noting that I answered the questions and confirmed that this will work on my computer. First, this mount comes with two stoppers attached to the universal mount, which I really liked. One screws into the end of the universal support and the other is a ring and set screw that slides over the support. Neither the one nor the other. I had to drill and tap an M6 X 1.0 thread on the end of the post, which later became a problem. Keep in mind that I am a former machine shop owner and have a manual machine shop in my garage. The lower part of the jig has a cast radius. This creates clearance for the collar. The problem with the old jig was you couldn't get a straight edge to save your life. This device has an adjuster to compensate for this problem and it is extremely difficult to get it right. Let me say again that it is very difficult to justify. When you make an adjustment, the radius in the mount no longer extends past the collar, so I had to sand down most of the collar. After this problem was solved, I found that the material that the brace is made of is very soft. So soft that the drilling and tapping at the end caused it to shrink from .004" to .005", causing the jig to bounce at the end of the stroke. The problem was solved with 400 grit sandpaper, which was generally a given for the Tormek course. I know several carpenters who attended the fair and, like me, were fascinated by the Tormek showmen building these machines. Most had the common sense to dump them soon after, but not me. I go back to the fountain every few years just to confirm how much I dislike it.
