There are instructions but if you follow them you will never get the right protection. I understand they have to say put them under cold water because people will complain if they get burned, but if you do, the guard won't go moldy in your mouth. I followed the instructions several times and got nowhere until I skipped this step. Even after that I had to do it again to get a better fit. I've never been able to get a comfortable fit above all other than ruining the thing. I really wish they would include a second one for the price they charge. After practicing on the first one, maybe I can get one that can be carried. My dentist insists that I use hard ones rather than soft ones and that fits perfectly, but I don't want to spend another $25 for it.
