PC compatible, requires NO PCIe fanout

Advantages • PC compatible - not only for QNAP systems • PLX Bridge chip - does not require a motherboard with PCIe fanout • Downloadable • No special driver Required - Windows automatically detects and installs drivers • Heatsink + fan included Drawbacks • Inefficient heatsink and fan design • Performance drop in synthetic benchmarks with 4k > 1 thread I tested QM2-2P-344 and QM2-2P-384 on a Windows PC. There is no noticeable performance penalty in a single SSD configuration compared to a single-slot passive PCIe SSD adapter. These QNAP adapters are basically a 2-slot Aplicata Quad M.2 NVMe SSD PCIe x8 adapter (B01MTU75X4). If you're looking for a quad-core M.2 adapter, the QM2-4P-384A (B07CVGZZCT) should be on par with Aplicata in terms of features and performance. The SSD runs 8°C cooler than without a heatsink/fan. The heatsink is quite powerful and appears to be made of pure copper. Unfortunately, more than half of the airflow coming from the fan exits through the sides and end of the card. I need to 3D print a fan cover to redirect all airflow along the length of the card. This will be for a future project when I have time. In synthetic 4k benchmarks, there is a drop in performance when accessing both SSDs at the same time. It seems to be a limitation of the PLX bridge chip. I've observed this on multiple systems with different SSDs. Maybe someone can shed some light on this phenomenon? Overall, I would recommend this card to anyone looking for a multi m.2 PCIe SSD adapter. This card is for anyone who needs additional m.2 PCIe SSD slots on a motherboard that doesn't support PCIe fanout. At the time of writing this review, I'm only aware of two brands (QNAP and Aplicata) with cards that support these features. bios v1.50 Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.7 GHz 32 GB DDR3 2400 MHz Samsung 950 PRO 512 GB (OS disk) Windows 10 Pro Build 1803 CrystalDiskMark 6.0.1 • Single (baseline) • 2 SSDs simultaneously • Windows Striped volume
