Review on ๐ŸŽฎ Nintendo Switch GameCube Style PowerA Wired Controller in Purple by Mark Sharma

Better than the hori pillow but still not very good.

It makes me sad that this controller has some egregious flaws that keep it from being a really good Game Cube-inspired controller. , but not so much that it detracts from its use), but what it struggles with are the control knobs and triggers. The control knobs seem to suffer from the same problem as the Hori knobs, but to a lesser extent. They have a pretty bad snapback on release, so they can sometimes register reverse entries if you make multiple exact entries in a row that require different directions (namely, combos and the like with certain characters in Smash). It didn't show up nearly as often as the Hori controller, so at least it's an improvement, but then the PowerA controller has a very different and, frankly, bigger problem - its triggers. As you notice in the images, the PowerA controller uses analog triggers in exactly the same way as the GC controller. At first glance it seems amazing. until you realize that the PowerA controller doesn't actually have an analog input. Has a digital input. Only when fully depressed. As such, it effectively combines the worst aspects of analog and digital - for great results you have to keep pressing and just on/off instead of stepping in. This is bad. This means that in a game like Smash Bros, for example, you will accidentally miss a lot of reels or shields because you have to press Enter to the end. They obviously wanted to change the shoulder buttons, as the R and L buttons (which the GC controller used to only have Z of) are oddly raised and angled. It's not that bad, but it shows that they were already willing to ditch the original controller, so why not just use digital triggers?

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Embarrassing
