Review on ๐Ÿ“ฆ StarTech.com eSATA Enclosure - Trayless Metal HDD Enclosure - USB 3.0 / eSATA - 3.5in SATA - External Hard Drive Enclosure by David Sidman

Revainrating 5 out of 5

"Fanless design " is a bug, not a feature

The case, external power supply, eSATA cable and USB 3.0 cable all have good fit and finish and feel solid. Discs slide in and out with minimal effort. The product works flawlessly with Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD. However, there is one significant design flaw - there is no fan. I was planning to use the enclosure for backups, clones etc and knew the drives could be 100% charged for hours. During initial testing, I saw the drive heat up within minutes. So I decided to open the case and see if I could add a fan. I found that StarTech has already done most of the engineering (!). The molded plastic back panel has a fan mounting hole and grille panels, but they are not perforated. The PCB has cutouts for installing a fan and through holes for installing a 0.1" 2 pin connector near where the fan should be. Mechanically everything is there. But electrically there is a PCB through hole connected to DC ground, the other PCB through hole seemed to be floating, and the DC positive is switched smoothly on the PCB (not directly by an on/off switch), and the floating pin connect to the DC input plus.In addition to going out After the warranty I knew that plugging in the fan without turning off the power could reverse power to the electronics and I risked damaging the unit.I was lucky - the electrical hack worked fan always spins when an external power supply is plugged in regardless of the switch position. It is important that the plate temperature now remains acceptable during continuous operation. While I was working on the case mod/electronics project t been successful, I would rather have StarTech complete the design/manufacture and sale of the case with running vent cooling Ilator.
