Review on πŸ–¨οΈ Efficient Mini Print Server: Featuring 1 Parallel Port for Seamless Connectivity by Eric Pavelko

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works with traditional impact printers

I am using this print server with the Panasonic KX-P2023 and KX-P1123 impact printers to print multi-part invoices and receipts. Network. I haven't had the same luck with some other compact print servers (Ethernet for parallel connection). The device itself is quite elegant and compact. Installation was quick and easy. The instructions (only a few pages of a huge volume in 15 or more languages) were clear and to the point. There are three negative traits that caused this little print server to lose a star in my rating. Two downsides are common to all mini print servers, so I'll probably be a little harsh in dismissing this excellent product. First off, the print server is about two inches long and has a Centronics connector on the end. If your printer has a rear port, the port may be interfering with the form feed. This isn't just for the first tier, as other small servers are similarly shaped, tend to be larger, and cause the same problem. Second, the external power supply has a European plug. An adapter is included for US use, but the entire assembly is unusually bulky. The power prongs are exceptionally long to fit recessed round European sockets. As a result, the US power supply and adapter assembly above is quite large and heavy. Third, why on earth wouldn't anyone make a print server with a 25-pin Sub-D printer connector? Sub-D Centronics cables with either right-hand or left-hand Centronics connectors are available on the market. These cables, while bulky, tuck away neatly and keep the print server out of the way. I ended up buying a Centronics female to 25 pin sub D male (I don't think Revain carries them) just to get the print server out of the way. The Level One FPS-1031 has proven to be a great product that has worked flawlessly with my older Impact printers which are easy to network and may need a little more real estate above the power strip than you would expect. I emailed Level 1 Technical Support to see if my printers are supported. Their answer was a quick but short link to their compatibility chart. I would give level 1 points for quick replies, but remain neutral on their bedside behavior or their level of English.
