I've tried cell phone repairs and heat shrink splicing in the past and the instructions always recommend a heat gun. I used a hair dryer due to a lack of better options. I didn't think the heat gun was really that big of a deal. until I got one. Wow, why didn't I try this sooner? I just used it with some shrink wire connections and it was so easy and effective! I love that it has a small metal stand so you don't have to place it hot on a table or floor where it can be damaged (unlike a hair dryer) and the localized heat makes it easy to aim for just that , what I wanted. without heating everything around.
