I bought a 7.5 Extra Wide 801 a few years ago to walk my dog and fill bird feeders as I can't wear my slippers outside. These 801s were, so to speak, just "street shoes". I'm a woman with bursitis, so I often can't find women's sizes that are too big. From the reviews I read I bought the same size as the old 801s which were great but have since fallen apart. The new ones are really cool! The arch support isn't that good but for the time I'll be wearing it I think it's still ok. I don't try to move my orthotics just to walk the dog or get to the mailbox. Also, they're made of woven material, unlined, which isn't that soft on the inside, and my bursitis sufferer rubs it a bit, so long walks can cause a blister. But I give credit as they are closer to performance than many shoes. I have a hard time putting on shoes with my narrow heel and wide toe with bursitis. New Balance is a brand that suits my kind of bad walking shoes. The new version works better with my socks so chafing is not a problem. But I don't always wear socks when I switch to "outer slippers". In any case, they are pretty close to the old, wonderful, but already worn out 801s. The question is, why are the new versions never as good or as broad as the old ones?
