Review on MidNite Solar CLASSIC 150 MPPT Charge Controller: Efficient 150V Operation, 96 Amps Output, ETL Listed to UL1741 and CSA, Type 1 Environmental Rating by Shah Nelson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The best MPPT CC I've ever used, but far from perfect.

I love this controller because when paired with the Whiz Bang Jr it accurately charges batteries using power boosters and still handles loads! Haven't seen this option anywhere. My main concerns are that the firmware, software and mobile app are so broken and badly coded by obvious amateurs that you will be fed up with what you paid for it and completely question the legitimacy of the company. Simply navigating the menus on the built in display can reset all history and logs and the LAN connection also hangs daily requiring me to navigate to the physical device to get into the LAN settings just to get on Click OK to make it work again. Then there's the manual, which also offends the injury a bit, as it's just a few printed and stapled pages that barely explain the more precise settings. Now for the function. At first I thought maybe I had a bad blockage because in the morning and evening when 1-2 amps are on the input the device starts to switch back and forth between "bulk" (charging) and "resting" (not charging) and switch quite noisy relay during this time, customer service said this behavior is normal. To me this seems like a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on a relay like this, also I've never had a charge controller that uses a mechanical relay (that I could at least hear) to stop/start charging. Finally, the device isn't as "efficient" as claimed or others I've used and for some reason I've lost about 1-2 amps of power since starting. It also gets hot enough to be bothersome even at 15A of output power in a 77°F room, so I placed a couple of small 24V fans over the shielded "knockout" holes on the bottom, which comes at a cost of much more waste efficiency seem to help. All in all, as I said, I haven't found another CC that at least feeds my expensive batteries as well as this unit, so I recommend it and just add more panels to make up for the lost efficiency like mine.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Safety
