Actually bought four of these for my bookshelves. Just use the rivet finder and find the rivet somewhere behind the bookshelf. The center would be better, but it doesn't matter. From the top of the bookshelf, go down a few inches and mark a spot exactly in the middle of the shelf. This means that the straps can be hidden. Take the washer, put it on the screw, then add the tape behind it (velcro facing you) and screw it into the mark you made on the wall earlier. Move the bookshelf against the wall and since the velcro is facing you, it will now be facing down towards your bookshelf. Remove the backing of the Velcro and attach it to the top of the bookshelf. Make sure the strap attached to the wall has little to no slack. You have now successfully protected your bookshelf from earthquakes (or toddlers in my case). Rinse and repeat on all your dressers, bookshelves, etc. until you're done. I personally use a drill to pre-tap the threads to make it easier for the screw to go in. I also use a cordless drill/driver for drilling and screwing. Attaching two straps to a power tool bookshelf takes less than 5 minutes including finding the bolts and checking for deadness. Inserting this long screw into the stud by hand would require tremendous hand strength and probably 10 minutes per belt. If you don't put it in a stand but just put it in drywall, you might not have them. 20 pounds of pull and you blast the drywall and the whole thing collapses. Even with drywall dowels, this will still be questionable, so just stick them into the frame. Again, it doesn't have to be in the middle as the straps are about a foot long and you can adjust where you put the velcro stickers. Better to be safe than sorry later. You won't regret this purchase if you have children or live in a seismic area or both.
