I was hesitant to buy this, my cat is about 10 years old and very fat. I figured that she would never bother going down to our basement to mind her own business, let alone going down through a small door. But here we are 5 months later without a single problem. Before I crashed into my door, I taught her how to get down there by leaving the basement door open for a few days. As soon as I realized that going into the basement was convenient for her, I installed a cat door. It was pretty easy, it took me a few hours because I didn't use the template based on other reviews. I didn't want any gaps at all, so I followed the instructions to trace the smallest bet and then gradually widen it until it was tight. It took longer, but it was worth it for the looks. Don't place it too close to the ground or it will look weird and make it difficult for the cat to climb through. After installing it, I left the lid open for over a month so my stupid cat could keep using it. Installing the sunroof once it was in the door was a 2 man job. The rubber valve does not prevent you from using it. She makes a little noise when she passes, but not too much. No problems with stuck paws or stomachs. This size was perfect for her, she weighs about 15 pounds.
