My chickens live just over a year and until recently we used shavings in their bird feeders. The boxes were constantly empty because the fries were thrown away, the eggs were often broken or the eggs were covered in fries. When I first put them in the bird feeders I wasn't sure how my chickens would react. At first they dismantled some pads but eventually stopped. The pads stay in place and protect the eggs much better than shavings. No more broken eggs and clean eggs right out of the box! I haven't had to change it yet, but I think it will be easy! No more shavings to rake out of every box!
