AVOID! 50/50 shot, it works. Literally.

So the first time I ordered they sent me the NON FAN version which I already have. Literally the same device, just without the built-in fan. Of course I bought it FOR the fan so I had to return it and buy the item again hoping I get what I paid for the second time around. Unfortunately the second appears, the correct one as I had hoped. I set it up and the first thing I noticed was that the fan doesn't spin when I turn on the unit. I put the disk in the tray, turned it on again, and finally the fan started spinning. I think the fan is either sensing heat or the presence of the hard drive, but now it's spinning, so yes. It's all right, isn't it? uh WRONG. As other reviewers have pointed out (much to my dismay), this case doesn't recognize my drive! The drive (an 8TB HGST HUH728080ALE600 enterprise hard drive) that I've been using for 2-3 years with no problems asks for an initialization when placed in THIS case. Now we both know it's not happening. I'm not going to initialize and possibly waste terabytes running some shitty ass for years. But I mean WTF? It's really, literally, the SAME case, except for the fan! Obviously this new one has to have a controller that uses different firmware than the previous fanless version I have because it's ridiculous to buy an enclosure and NOT be able to put a working HDD or SSD in it and it will work right away. I suggest you avoid this version of this case, the docking station, whatever you want to call it. And I think I've learned other methods to keep my stupid hot HGST hard drive running cooler than it is because it's a Sabrent device? YES, REALLY! PS if you read reviews on this device that say it wants to INITIALIZE its drive? BELIEVE THEM!

Pros
  • practical item
Cons
  • so far so good
