As the motorhome ages the valves start to leak a bit, mostly on the gray tank. (At least that's my hope). I use that and put a small plastic ball valve on the end of the hose. When it's time to connect, I put a bucket under the block and turn on the ball valve. If I detect a leak through the valves, it runs into a bucket so I can flush it down the drain. Then I can remove the cap and connect with no mess or fuss. Unfortunately my valves are way below my trainer so I can put off repairs until they are really bad.
