Review on 🚽 Improved ABS Black Cast Iron Closet Flange Replacement - Oatey 43538, 4-inch by Brandon Burnham

Revainrating 3 out of 5

If you have old cast iron pipes, be prepared for a possible struggle.

I ended up getting it to fit my 50 year old 4 inch cast iron downpipe but it scratched A LOT on the inside of the pipe to fit. Over the years, the inside of the drain pipe has corroded and formed a "bumpy" rusty scab. It is IMPOSSIBLE for it to fit without removing a significant buildup. I ended up using a 3-5/8" bi-metal hole saw to clean out the inside and eventually managed to assemble it, but it took a lot of effort and probably destroyed my $18 hole saw in the process. I like the fact that the seal is on the inside; as opposed to an exterior like the Oatey 42255 (mentioned below) and I'm oak with the hole reduction of this fitting (the toilet hole is smaller so I figured it would be ok). So if you intend to use this flange and an old cast iron drain I would consider the fact that you might have a serious job cleaning the inside diameter of the pipe to fit it. So I would give that a try and if it doesn't fit, look elsewhere if you are unable to clean the inside. If your pipe is almost flush with the finished floor, Oatey 42255 may be the easier option to install. I might have used Oatey 42255 (I haven't tried it) which would be easier. but I was concerned that the pipe was below the finished tile (about Β½ inch) and I read reviews that this only works if your pipe is level with the finished floor; So I was concerned that the gasket wasn't sealing properly. I insisted on this flange, so ultimately I can't comment on Oatey 42255. Also, I can't comment on the compatibility of this flange with plastic drains. It should definitely fit in (the spec for plastic is 3.998 inches) but not sure if the gasket can expand enough to seal. For technical guys: I measured the flange OD of this fitting and found it to be 3.7 inches. The spec for the inside diameter of 4" cast iron is 3.94, so it "should" fit in a .24" gap. Maybe my cast iron is different (old) or the build was so big, but like I mentioned I've had a heck of a time to adjust it. So just something to look out for when looking for and checking out a replacement flange.
