is not required. I bought it in September and I didn't take the iPad out of the house because of the quarantine. torn protective film 11/30. My iPad fell from knee height in one of those pillow/iPad holders so I'm not sure how the thing cracked yet! Will be replacing both mine and husband ASAP as this screen protector is definitely useless if either of us drops our iPad from a height or onto a surface that could cause damage.
