Review on πŸ’Ώ Cloudtale USB C 3.0 and Type-C External Blu-ray DVD Drive Reader, Blu-ray Optical CD DVD Drive for MacBook, Windows Laptop, Desktop PC by Ryan Ramirez

Works great on my old MacBook Pro (at least for now)

We archive family photos and videos on Blu-ray discs. My 2011 Macbook Pro doesn't have a BR drive and it has been impractical to use the drive on my iMac for a long time, so I bought one for my laptop. Using it as a Blu-ray reader was downright trivial; I plugged it in, mounted the volumes on the desktop and everything just worked. Apple doesn't support Blu-ray movie format in system software or add-on software, but there are several third-party solutions in Mac App Store. I tried two and settled on Leawo Blu-Ray Player. The initial reading of the film takes up to a few minutes, but the first two films I watched performed flawlessly. It's free, but registration (not cheap) allows you to make copies of your movies in MKV format so they can be played from your desktop. This has a special advantage - the reading speed of the player is only double, so fast forward becomes limited and uneven, and rewind hardly works. Watching from an MKV copy offers better response, instant start and improved fast forward and rewind. The drive is very compact and light. The drive cable is very short and firmly connected. It is stored on the bottom of the case for easy storage and portability. Seems to be running cool. This is a USB 3.0 drive, but plugging into a 2.0 port works fine, just slower. The manufacturer suggests plugging it directly into a computer, but it worked when plugged into a powered USB hub. There is a USB-C adapter in the box. On the downside, the aluminum outer case doesn't quite fit perfectly, but it's not a functional issue and it's hard to see. The drive is a little noisy, but not critical. Again, the slow read speed makes fast-forwarding and rewinding Blu-ray movies a bit problematic. I haven't tried burning discs with Toast Titanium or the OS X system software. Once I have done this I will comment on this review. So far I'm happy with this disc.
