Cannot flatten hamburgers enough due to curled edges

I love most of Lodge's products so I chose this hamburger press over others. I was expecting this hamburger press to have a flat bottom, but to my surprise there is a rim around the edge of the press that limits the plane of pressing the hamburger or meat patty. Because of that "lip," you can't even use it in a bacon pan or even to press sandwiches. I tried using this press to make "smashing hamburgers" but I couldn't get the patties as flat as I would like and ended up with the patties sticking to the press.
