Review on πŸ’Ύ WD 2TB Elements USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Old Version) - WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN by Michael Norwood

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Well, this external hard drive works great and hasn't broken yet.

2 years each). But the reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because IT DOESN'T WORK WITH MY SONY BLU-RAY PLAYER! And THAT was the COMPLETE REASON I bought the damn thing. I have a Sony BDP-S550 1080 that can play USB devices. I've never had any problems. I make movies and like to watch them at night on my Blu-ray player since it's in my room and I don't have an HD TV in my room (so I can't just use a laptop plugged in). connect with an HDMI cable). My Toshiba hard drives were very easy to use and I could just plug them into my Blu-ray player and watch them. super easy. I suspect that USB devices (especially hard drives over 1TB) can now be formatted as GPT or MBR, but Blu-ray players (obviously I know now) can't play GPT! And now that external hard drives come with more storage, 1-2TB+, it's getting harder and harder to get an external one that's only 500GB. And if it's 1TB or more, it's usually GPT like this. I checked and researched this A LOT before I bought it and got as much information about it as possible and I was under the impression that it would work on my Blu-ray player. Nowhere in the product description does it say it won't work with a Blu-ray player. If the technology is different and doesn't work the way people are used to from their media devices (like a simple plug and play) then I expect them to tell you. I find it funny that they make them incompatible with Blu-ray players! What's the use of having all that storage if you can't even use it!? I've heard that you can try reformatting it to smaller partitions than MBR and that it might be compatible with my Blu-ray player, which I think I'll try, but it's very annoying (especially since I I already have my stuff stored on it from my broken Toshiba hard drive and I may not be able to access it again if I remove and reformat it as I don't have an extra 1TB to put it in during the time). I've heard that you can use a DLNA server to connect your media devices to wirelessly access your hard drive from a Blu-ray connectable computer, but I couldn't get it to work properly. . It's just very frustrating and I regret buying it. I would rather just buy another 500GB from Toshiba as I know they will work on my media devices.

Pros
  • . WD quality and reliability.
Cons
  • . Some problems.
