The Good and The Bad

Purchased in January 2016. The hard drive started failing in June 2016. While he worked, he worked well. However, when it crashed, any software on my laptop that was related to the data on the hard drive froze and locked up the computer for a while. WD's online software support wasn't easy to find, and once found, the proprietary diagnostic software didn't recognize their product the first few times. After scanning the device for 15 hours, I was prompted to repair some bad sectors. However…

Pros

Well, this external hard drive works great and hasn't broken yet.

2 years each). But the reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because IT DOESN'T WORK WITH MY SONY BLU-RAY PLAYER! And THAT was the COMPLETE REASON I bought the damn thing. I have a Sony BDP-S550 1080 that can play USB devices. I've never had any problems. I make movies and like to watch them at night on my Blu-ray player since it's in my room and I don't have an HD TV in my room (so I can't just use a laptop plugged in). connect with an HDMI cable). My Toshiba hard drives were very easy to use…

Pros
  • . WD quality and reliability.
Cons
  • . Some problems.

Do not trust this model

I used to only buy the WD brand but the last 3 I bought broke down shortly after purchase and have had very little use. I bought this one in 2017, it didn't even take a month before I started noticing problems. I was only using it as a file backup so I backed up my files once a month, unplugged and kept them. I thought I just got a bad one and ordered a few more, bad idea, same problems with one, the other one still works but I see the same errors happening. I tried formatting it's just a bad…

format error on Mac

I've had this drive for about 6 or 7 months now. It was good and I used it on a Windows PC with no problems. I recently switched to a Mac and wanted to use this hard drive with it, but it only allowed me to read the contents of the drive, not write it. So I followed WD Elements instructions to use it on my Mac. I backed up all my files to my computer so I didn't lose anything and then followed the steps that required reformatting them for use with a Mac. I went into Disk Utility and erased it…

Pros
  • Formatted for Windows 8, 7, Vista and XP; Easy format drive for Mac

Good simple external hard drive

WD Elements 2TB hard drive has been working fine for me for a few months. I've used it to back up my computer's hard drive and have had no problems using it with USB 2.0 and 3.0 connections. It's formatted for use with Windows (I mainly use mine with Windows 7), but it can be reformatted for Mac, although I haven't tried it. This is a basic drive that's great for basic file backups. I back up the files I want manually and let them transfer. While transfer speeds are reasonable, backing up a…
