The Good and The Bad

Purchased in January 2016. The hard drive started failing in June 2016. While he worked, he worked well. However, when it crashed, any software on my laptop that was related to the data on the hard drive froze and locked up the computer for a while. WD's online software support wasn't easy to find, and once found, the proprietary diagnostic software didn't recognize their product the first few times. After scanning the device for 15 hours, I was prompted to repair some bad sectors. However, after this message I was informed that these bad sectors could not be repaired. Every support article you read about troubleshooting external hard drives invariably talks about the need to always back up your data. Well, this product is a standby; That's exactly what you need a 2TB external hard drive for, and a six-month lifespan doesn't inspire much confidence. I called warranty support. For a $100 credit card charge, you will receive a replacement product with instructions on how to return the failed drive. While they provide a link to the UPS discount label for return shipping, these costs are the responsibility of the buyer. Buyer pays return shipping.
