I got this 3 pound hammer to use with my Kindling Cracker because it was recommended by others. Yes, this works well if you are splitting smaller logs for kindling and need to place the cracker on a raised platform like a log. This setup is better for your back. However, I think I'll order a 4lb hammer with a slightly longer handle as many of my logs are heavier and I use it on the ground sometimes. It will still be a good tool for driving stakes into the ground and storing in the garage. In my opinion, there are never too many tools! My only other comment is that the pen has a thick grip for women's hands. I'm still getting used to it as it's a bit wider than my axe and I think my sledgehammer is too!
