Review on High Power Tri-Power Portable Baofeng UV-5R Two Way Radio for Ham Radio Enthusiasts by Brandon Daughenbaugh

Programming UV5R 8W

I ordered a pair of these and they arrived a day late which was fine with me. When they show up much later, it's annoying. Now for programming. I have been told that if I use CHIRP I will need to program them with a different radio designation. Okay it works but when you do that you can't access SETTINGS. If you program them make sure you tell the program it's a UV5R and download all the crap that's in there from the factory onto the computer and then program the radio in addition to that , which already exists. Then upload it back to the radio. Once you've done that, you can go to SETTINGS and set everything up the way you want it. Make sure you change those crappy noise reduction settings that come from the factory. In the last few years I have bought almost 20 UV5R versions of 5W and 8W. BAO FENG has featured some of the best models but I want all my radios to have interchangeable parts and accessories so all my radios are the same. Eventually it gets crazy and I want to have enough radios to power my neighbors. The only reason I gave these 4 stars is because these two came with a small, clumsy 5" antenna that doesn't work as well as a flimsy, flexible 7" antenna.

Pros
  • Excellent overall
Cons
  • Nothing here
