Or, in my case with cats, a new object to rub. He's only used it to scratch a few times so far, but once he smells it again I'm sure he'll feel comfortable digging his claws into it. It's a little light so perfect for smaller cats but my cat is about 12.5 pounds and I plan to stuff her with something to weigh her down so she doesn't move around as much under his weight. There is a small hole where you put the cherry stem that should be able to do this. But that's a common problem for my cat with most scratching posts, and so far it's the only one I can really strain, so that's a plus!
