If you're in doubt between this and a cheaper option that seems to do about the same thing, let me just say the extra Benjamins are more than worth it. Welding training from a friend who is a professional welder and has been teaching welding most of her life and has a few that she uses on many different projects as well as for students to take their first steps. I won't even begin to say that I make anything remotely nice welds with this or any other machine (yet), but I will say that I don't routinely want to bang through hot chunks of metal out of desperation, and welds that I get, is constructively absolutely useful. I've used this beast on steel up to 3" thick and made individual fillets on a 1/2" x 3" flat tee and I was able to get a solid penetration (I used a sledgehammer just in case). By the way, it's not designed for this kind of work at all, but I used what I had and I'm glad I had this beautiful machine.
