I live in suburban Phoenix, which is fast becoming one of the most polluted cities in the country. So I need an air purifier in my bedroom to avoid breathing problems due to air pollution. I used to use a HEPA filter in my air conditioner, but my HVAC guy advised against it. After half a dozen more questions, everyone seemed to agree that using thick HEPA filters in HVAC systems causes fans to burn out faster. I've been using some sort of portable HEPA filter in my bedroom for a while. In 2005 or 2006 I bought two Honeywell filters here at Revain. They worked very well for several years, but the problem was that I needed two of them. Unfortunately, I've found that I can no longer get filters for them, so it's time to update them. I've done considerable homework on air purifiers. It's a tricky market as "basic" models seem to be in the $200-$300 range, while top-end models are in the $400-$500 range. I don't need such a good model because all I really need is to keep my bedroom clean. However, I would prefer to use only one device. Looking through many guides, including reviews from Revain and Consumer Reports, I found that you need to spend at least $300-$400 to get an "excellent" rating on an air purifier. To fall into the "very goodโ category, you need between $200 and $300. To be "nice," still look for $150-$250. And then there's this bad boy. It received a "good" rating from Consumer Reports for under $100. Febreeze now makes a slightly smaller air purifier that looks almost exactly like this one, but I went with the larger size in the hope that I would only need one. So far, so good. I connected the air purifier on Monday evening. I noticed the difference immediately when I walked in the door after work on a Tuesday afternoon. My house smelled noticeably fresher and I found that when I woke up in the morning I didn't have as many sinus and respiratory problems. I find having one of these is better than having two old Honeywell units that I had to get rid of. Now for the cons. My god, the Febreeze air freshener smells awful. I knew better. I shouldn't have opened that stupid bag, but I did. And like an idiot, I actually set the little cartridge in my air freshener to the lowest setting. Then I went to the post office. After about three minutes, I was again faced with a wall of impenetrable stench that was burning my sinuses and making my chest so itchy that a cough could not stop it. I immediately took the cartridge out of the slot and wrapped it in ziplock bags four times before tossing it in the bin. It took 10 days to get this smell out of my house and the first half of that time I had to sleep on the couch because I couldn't physically breathe in my bedroom. chlorine gas. It takes my breath away and I can't breathe for a few moments afterwards. It makes me a little sad to know that Febreeze makes such an excellent air purifier that they could charge a few bucks less with no bad smell. I still can't get rid of it.
