I installed one of these filters on my 2003 Mini Cooper R50 about a month or 2000 miles ago. (Yes, I drive this car at least 24,000 miles a year). My factory intake setup had deteriorated to the point that it needed to be replaced. Its parts no longer stay together; too many broken tabs and torn off screws. I've been using a standard K&N airbox with a plug-in filter for about a year. So my impression of this recording is not a comparison to the stock, but rather to K&N. I can't say for sure that it increased performance in any way over the stock K&N box/insert, but it gave me this cool sound (my wife even loves it!). This sound drives me even more towards aggressive driving. Which I think explains the slight drop in fuel consumption. However, there were problems with the landing. The most important thing to remember is; Do not tighten the throttle body silicone boot to the last. I missed this point in the instructions and found that the mount would not reach the rubber mount of the vibration mount if I bolted it to the throttle body first. I didn't want to force it by stressing the throttle. After everyone loosened and tightened the bracket first, everything else went fine. The included rocker cover vent hose is approximately 1 inch shorter and will not fit on the engine side; its inner diameter is larger than the breather tube on the valve cover. I had a small hose clamp on hand and tightened it with it; share a 1 inch difference between both ends. The inner diameter of this new hose is a perfect match for the intake breather tube. All I needed was a yoke on the side of the motor to compensate for the mismatch. Now, with a few weeks/miles on, I can see it rubbing against the soundproofing lining the bottom of my hood. It makes contact with the top of the filter itself and along the length of the vent hose. It turns out that under them there is practically no additional free space. Not only can this contact be seen at the worn insulation under the hood, I can also see black threads of dust collecting on the filter element and I can also see that the top of the breather hose is dull worn. Pics here when I get a chance. Oh I also reinstalled the stock fresh air intake pipe from the nose above the radiator. It just blows air next to this new intake. I might do a heat shield for it one day so it gets cold air intake, not just fresh air ake .So, bottom line; Would I recommend this unit or would I buy another if I had a second R50? Maybe. I don't care about alternatives. The stock units aren't cheap to replace, and the more common air intakes (CAIs) found in NAM and elsewhere cost $100 more than these. (I didn't want to pay a $100 premium for a plastic heat shield/box). If I had a perfectly sealed and healthy standard airbox I would keep it and spend $150 on something else. But if you need to replace your standard box. This is a great choice; as cool as i am about it.
