Our 2004 F150 needed some work. And how. We got it from a family last summer and it's put about 225,000 miles on it. And it had the original spark plugs in it. The recommended clearance for this model is 0.054-0.056 inches. The spark plugs that came out of the truck were in the .085 to .100 inch range. Crazy that it worked at all. Well, he stopped working right after Christmas, but what he's done so far is incredible. It was also unbelievable that none of the traffic jams were recorded. I followed standard procedures for unplugging. Some basics: Before removing the old spark plug, blow compressed air through the coil seat to prevent dirt, rust, etc. from getting inside when the spark plug is pulled out. I injected some WD-40 into the spark plug. Socket shortly before inserting a new plug. I figured this would help loosen the socket after it was screwed in. I don't know if this is standard practice, but I went with this 7 out of 7 (the 8th connector awaits a ratchet wrench because my standard bits don't fit between the bolt on the coil pack and the fuel line above). - Make sure you have some dielectric grease to apply to the connector threads before screwing it in. If you don't have one handy, you can get one at your local auto parts store for a dollar or so. There's no need to buy $5-$10 canisters unless you're changing spark plugs in a dozen cars. Be patient. It took me about 3-4 hours to get everything done, not counting a few extra trips into town for a special wrench (7mm), for dielectric grease, WD-40 and an extra nozzle. It's worth it. It costs over $300 to have a mechanic do it and our mileage has already gone from 14 to 18+. The candles and a few tools I needed to get the job done would quickly add up to fuel savings.
