I bought this 17" UltraSharp in 2003 when it was still called the 1703FP. Three years ago I bought a 24" UltraSharp 2405U. I use them side by side. The 1703FP isn't quite as bright as the 2405U, but there's no difference in the clarity of letters, lines and other outlines. I assume so that the brightness on the 1708FP is probably better than my 2405U right now I do math graphing on these monitors and they are great for that (very sharp lines) Both monitors are maintenance free from date of purchase, as far as I can tell they show still displays that look as fresh as when first turned on and I have to admit that in 11 years with the 1703FP I've had the occasional drop, dip or bump, however when I set it up again and hit the power button it just keeps working, like nothing happened! That's why I came back to buy another one.
