I have a 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman S (R55) and the check engine light came on. After looking at several spots for bulb failures before taking the car to the Mini Cooper service department, one of the first things that came to my mind was to check and/or replace the gas cap. The factory gas cap even says it needs to be sealed to keep the check engine light from coming on. After screwing the gas cap on and off a few times, the service light went out. I checked and found that the gasket on my original gas cap was compressed and worn out. Since it was obvious it was time to replace the gas cap, I ordered a Stant 10844 gas cap. The gas cap fits exactly like the OEM gas cap and it sits snugly and locks into place with the same "click" when tightened. a. Although the black plastic grip is flatter and slightly smaller than the original manufacturer, the actual cap part fits perfectly. An added bonus of this cap is a plastic strap that prevents the cap from getting lost. The strap attaches and attaches to the hole located on the fuel filler flap hinge. The cap that came with my car didn't have one and prevents it from falling off or forgetting to put the gas cap on when filling up.
