A reflector is an essential tool for any photographer who shoots portraits, especially outdoors. The beauty of street portraits lies in using perfect sunlight, but the reflector allows you to do that to a much greater extent. With a white, silver and gold reflector there are possibilities for different looks and different degrees of reflection. For example, on portraits of a woman in a blue and white dress, I used a silver reflective side to create bright, high-contrast studio lighting. One of the most underestimated features of a reflector is the 'bare coat', a diffuser for softer lighting when exposed to direct sunlight. During the afternoon alumni photo shoot pictured here, I used a diffuser to soften the light a lot, as if it were a nice cloudy day. a simple blank background and it worked really well. I have two of these because they are incredibly useful and I take them to every photo shoot or always leave one in my car in case I forget it.
