They're hard to find

Wow to show you how old fashioned portholes are these days when I asked about lightbulbs at a hardware store a clerk just gave me a blank look and the elderly gentleman laughed. and said he hadn't seen one in years. There's no shortage of deals on LED lights here though, with some in the $200 range and others as high as $600. This is something that used to be found anywhere for the price of a hamburger. My goal was to use it to illuminate an original oil painting and create an ambience above my bed. Regardless of the brand of LED bulbs I looked at, they all put out a bright blue and white light that would make my bedroom look like a used parking lot. And LED bulbs don't dim very well, so I wanted to use standard incandescent bulbs. They are almost impossible to find. The design hasn't changed since grandma's time, only it's much more expensive. My painting is 36 inches tall so two 15 watt light bulbs are required, which this one has. And I have a variety of bulb options, as opposed to an LED light where the bulb is permanently plugged in. To clarify a couple of things I've read that aren't entirely accurate, one of them concerns adjustability. To be clear, this fixture is adjustable enough to direct the light onto the surface of the painting so it doesn't blind my eyes. In other words, it does what it's supposed to do. Another thing is the short life of the bulb - in the lamp there is nothing in either one or the other that can reduce the life of the bulb. If someone is experiencing short lifespans from their lamps, they should look for another cause, e.g. B. by the brand of lamps he buys or faults in the electrical wiring of his house. If a dimmer is used, like I do, lamp life shouldn't be an issue. This instrument is well built and good looking, it will not win any awards. You can mount it to the wall behind the picture or directly to the back of most wooden picture frames which I have done. The cord is long enough if your painting is hanging directly over an outlet, otherwise you may need an extension cord. The built-in power switch is closer to the plug than the device. Overall, it lights my entire image fairly evenly and doesn't glare too much.
