Our basement drain started working this year (first time since we built the house) and since it happened I've been a little concerned. I bought this little device to plug into my real drain pipe and let me know if the water is rising before it gets high enough to flood my basement. I installed it on the side of my oven and dropped the sensor along with its weight (included) down the drain pipe. However, I fiddled with it and the weight fell off the sensor cable and ended up in the sewer. So I tied a small fishing weight to it and it still works fine. The price is low considering it can help you keep what's in your basement. I connected this to another water sensor for the floor (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004W4B4/ref=cm_cr_mts_prod_img) so I can also detect if there is water anywhere else on the floor (eg . , burst pipe). I spent about $26 between the two and would happily do it again should the need arise. Yes, both this and another device I bought have test buttons. Be sure to check them regularly and personally I would replace the battery like you do with your smoke alarms.
