Purchased from a private seller at Revain.com After reading other Revain.com reviewers, I realized that this was not a "beginner" device for the installation would be. However, I felt I had enough basic knowledge to set up an IP address as described by other TrendNet owners. I simply copied the IP addresses used by one and then the second of the two reviewers. Later I will explain why I changed it. I bought this to install on an HP LaserJet 5, knowing that this unit would require a parallel cable extender for the printer as per another Revain.com review. However, I decided to wait for the TrendNet server to arrive before I got the cable. BARE INSTALLATION WITHOUT A PARALLEL EXTENSION CABLE Shortly after the TrendNet server shipped, I decided to check that it worked right away and did so without an extension cable. With the HPLaserJet 5 printer, the parallel cable exits the HP case with a snug fit. So the TrendNet server really needs that extension cable. Without one, I removed and plugged in the TrendNet Server case. So I have a working but "naked" device. The casing is not difficult to remove. It has a screw under the top of the label and needs to be squeezed to release the two plastic hooks that snap the case into place. The label is very sticky and needs to be peeled off slowly. FRAGILE? As for its fragility when installed "naked" without a cover? The circuit board is thick and strong enough. On inspection, the TrendNet case serves to protect the circuitry from dust and to cover open circuits. Even if the cover is not removed, most of the mechanical stress appears to be on the circuit board, and the cover is a "protective bandage". on site. The HP cover can be easily trimmed to fit perfectly. The board is 99% inside the HP printer case, so I won't go into the parallel extension mentioned earlier for now. WHY TWO DIFFERENT IP ADDRESSES CHANGE It worked the way I wanted it to with a router. The laptop was able to print to a remote printer. However, I later installed a second router connected to the first router and encountered IP addressing issues. Routers use different ranges of IP addresses. Computers connected to the second router can use the printer. But the laptop connected to the first router can no longer do that. I found a solution to my dilemma on the internet. I didn't come back to fix it. For those who want to know, I have to make a switch out of the 2nd router. It's for another day.
