Review on Microsoft Surface Laptop (Intel Core I5 by Damon Fields

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great for a Windows device.

I liked the screen and the overall aesthetics of the device. No major performance issues, although Chrome stuttered from time to time. The keyboard on them moves too much for my liking as I prefer the chiclet style and would end up missing keystrokes. Windows Hello is a dream come true: signing in is MUCH faster. I don't understand why Apple doesn't use this on their Macbooks since they already have face recognition on the iPhone. They'll probably save that for the "next big update" cycle, along with a small boost in performance and another year of that awful butterfly keyboard. (mini-rant ended) I ended up bringing it back because I realized I was getting paranoid about the cloth material inside. I'm almost obsessive-compulsive paranoid when it comes to maintaining expensive electronics, and the fact that I had to worry about oil getting dirty on my hands made the experience very frustrating. I didn't like how glossy the screen was and couldn't use it in different lighting conditions, but it's very pretty so it's a sacrifice. I also DID NOT like the single USBA port and proprietary charging cable. Move with the times, Microsoft. I've opted for a cheaper aluminum Chromebook (Acer Chromebook 514) and I don't have to worry about it getting dirty. It does everything I need as I have a gaming PC for more intense tasks (and charges via USBC! - something a Surface laptop still can't do). If you prefer a full Windows laptop, this is for you. The build quality is first class. The only thing I didn't like was the Alcantara material inside, the outdated I/Os and the charging cable.

Pros
  • Notebooks
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
