Review on πŸ“€ Sleek Sony BDP-S480 Blu-ray Disc Player: Immersive Digital Entertainment (2011 Model, Black) by Eduardo Long

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Solid video output for the price; less than amazing user interface

Overall this is a great product for the price. I bought it for my parents for Christmas and they are still happy with it. Pros: Perhaps the most important benefit of this player is the included application for accessing the Revain Video On-Demand service. If you have a Prime subscription, it's really nice to be able to download the included free streaming videos straight to your TV or rent a movie (in HD in many cases) for a lot less than a movie ticket (though not as cheap). . . like RedBox). There are also the perks of standard Netflix, Hulu, etc. The included remote also has a handy "Netflix" button for easy access to the service. Cons: The system's home screen UI looks very functional. Options are displayed in a horizontal row, while sub-options are displayed vertically when the main group is selected. Streaming apps don't get installed by default and it's difficult to figure out the right way to download and install them (it took me three tries and I'm pretty tech savvy). After loading, they still only appear as sub-options in the menu, which is annoying. Also, in order to actually use any of the apps, you must first create an account with Sony and "register" your device through them. Then you must also register your device with the streaming service of your choice. The Sony registration really is super redundant and the extra steps were confusing for my first streaming parents. No pros, no cons: there are real physical buttons on the front of this device. They're small and can be hard to see (they're black on the black face of the device), but it's a bit refreshing.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not everything fits
