I've been playing around with Chinese laptops for a while now and I have to admit that 'play' is absolutely the most apt term, while Baofengs and Quanshengs are definitely inexpensive 'entry level' radios for new hams, and cheap enough you could afford three or four in your bug bag, there was no question they wouldn't replace my front line portables (which I won't name here because I didn't buy them). by Revain; in fact, when I bought it, I wasn't sure if Revain even existed, it's that old). I'm quite used to some of the features common to all Chinese branded radios (I won't say they are made in China because many "old line" radio amateurs seem to prefer mainland China as their country of origin). ), including two monitors (NOT scanning) and an FM radio (let's face it, under normal circumstances, hams in rural areas tend to be pretty quiet). Two things I've missed in low-end products, however, were essential before I "parked" my old trailers and started carrying spares on a regular basis: a working, adjustable silencer and a rotary frequency switch. After trying many offerings at local Hamfests, I settled on Wouxun: familiar profile, many familiar controls (some of them programmable), plenty of affordable accessories, and a reasonable price. I wasn't disappointed - the programming cable is a widely used USB adapter for Prolific chips, and there are at least three programs that adequately handle the input of multiple frequencies/change functions, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. . I started with the Wouxun KG-UV6D V2.2 software, but UV-6D Commander and Chirp also deserve a mention - they all work well, although all settings have to be changed manually via the menu. The manual that comes with the radio is actually helpful - something of a first for these budget radios; If I didn't have a small portable computer to install and run the software on, I could successfully make changes/additions on the fly by following instructions that actually work. "Old Faithful" is finally resting, though I still tend to have both on hand when I'm away from civilization.
