As others have pointed out these lights come without instructions so: White wire is neutral/earth and black wire is hot/power/12v. Same as 110v household wiring (Automotive circuits are usually black = ground and red = 12V). So no, you're not crazy! :-) I also hooked up one of these lights to use as a third brake light on my 32 Ford project. Good bright light. Almost the same brightness with rear light. The lens and base fit snugly, are made of durable plastic, there's nothing flimsy about them. The only thing I could ask for is a black base instead of white, but I'll probably just paint the edge of the base before installation.
