UPDATE: Fan motor died after 15 months of use. The engine was only 2.5 years old and fortunately still under warranty. The HVAC service center called the motor a "smart motor" and said the out-of-warranty replacement was the most expensive motor replacement it had ever seen. It is impossible to compare concretely and say that this filter is 100% to blame. He discussed a possible root cause to prevent recurrence and suggested I focus on MERV 5-8. Told me to buy the cheapest $5 filter in the big stores once a month. I bought this reusable K&N filter to save money in the long run. However, it's entirely possible that the increased static pressure caused by a MERV rating unnecessary for my household application was causing my "smart" fan motor to run too hard and drastically reduced its lifespan. I cannot risk another premature failure of such an expensive, sensitive, and vital HVAC component. This K&N filter will NEVER return to my system. PREVIEW: The curmudgeon in me loves the idea of a reusable home filter and the Merv rating is similar to my previous brand. This filter pays for itself in less than a year. I used to spend $85 every 18 months. However, cleaning can be a bit of a hassle, especially if you don't have your own backyard. I live in a terraced house and all of our green spaces are public. I can't just go out and dump garbage in public places in front of my neighbors. Right now I'm just aiming for a Sunday every block while my wife works and uses our kitchen sink behind her back and against her will, but it definitely hurts. Also, it can take up to 24 hours to fully dry. So how do you filter the air entering your HVAC system in the meantime? Unless you have your own yard dedicated solely to cleaning, I would suggest avoiding this article. Otherwise, I highly recommend it, with the caveat that you keep a cheap filter on standby for the 24 hours it takes for that filter to dry after cleaning. Much luck!
