Medium runs like a tiny one. But unfortunately I love the design and colors of the coat so I will order a larger size for my boy. I had to read the size chart better and I was able to keep that step. Hopefully the new size XL will fit my 19 lb dog! It's not the company's fault. I assumed the sizes of the dogs are the same. Update: Size XL fits my 19 lb dachshund mix perfectly and is long enough to cover his entire back. I love this coat and it seems to keep him warm so I bought a second one!
