unreliable and dead

I bought three of these. The first works well and I've used it extensively. The second one never worked but I was too lazy to return it. I "converted" it to run on a simple power supply and threw away the battery and charger. This will now come in handy. The third (why did I buy it, you ask) only worked for a very short time and then quit. It stays on with the LED on, but doesn't start. He doesn't answer at all.
